WeBMD has reported that a small study on a treatment to lower the risks of heart attacks due to high cholesterol, showed signs of success. The treatment involves injecting a key protein in HDL into the body, which would lower the LDL cholesterol. The study found that after patients were injected with the HDL protein, the removal of LDL increased by 164%.
The study was conducted by CSL Ltd. in Parkville, Australia. They told WeBMD that while treatments like niacin and fibrates are successful in removing cholesterol from artery walls, they can take years to be effective.
