Ok here are the 5 best ab exercises:
1. Crunch on exercise ball
2. Captain's chair or Hanging knee raise
3. Rope crunch

5. Reverse crunch (feet up in air)

If that's Kaplan's list then his reasoning for DB side bends is that most people use two dumbbells which creates momentum (as you raise from one side the DBs on the opposite side assist in the movement).

For #10 he suggests that lumbar flexion and rotation (which the machine allows) creates pressure on the spinal ligaments. What I've seen is that some of these machines take the client past active ROM by way of increased flexion. This does not mean one cannot use spinal rotation. However, a person should use proper progression (maintaining proper spinal alignment, ROM, and speed) when training rotation.

Phew! I do 1,2 and 5 so that's a good thing!

For my obiques I do side crunches on this "chair like" thing (I'm sorry I don't know what the damn thing is called.) I actually stand in it and bend up and down (on the side). I do 3 sets of 25.
Now that I've confused you, I'll hush up. :p

The technique shown here is actually INCORRECT (thighs should start at 90 degrees, not as shown) if you're trying to isolate the rectus abdominis, but that piece of equipment is the "captain's chair."

are you saying that the thighs should not go past a 90 degree angle? His are going clear up to his chest and am I to assume that is what you mean by incorrect? Thanks :)

Or do they start at 90 to keep steady tension on the muscles?
