If someone says to you, "I'll bet you $1 that if you give me $2, I will give you $3 in return", would this be a good bet for you to accept?

Yes but what if he gives him the $3 a year later. He could 11 cents interest.

No. Because if you give him $2, he breaks the bet, and only owes you $1. So he makes out with a $1 for his time.

Yep, best case you break even (unless you welch on your bet). Worst case, you lose $1 (unless he welches, then you're down $2). So not a good bet!
