I tore my quad once doing squats. I knew it was torn because i heard the muscle rip apart. It immediately got red from the blood vessels being torn open. It was sore to touch but nothing crazy and i could walk okay. However, when i tried walking up any stairs, i would be in tears (figure of speech). I was lucky and it didn't tear all the way to the bone, so i didn't need surgery. I torn and Achilles tendon last summer diving of a dock into a lake. Again, i was very lucky. Both incidents took about 6 weeks to heal. Trust me, you will know it if you ever tear a muscle.
