Alright, since i've started my diet i've been eating more and more tuna fish right out of the can. I forgot the benifits, thats like 36 grams of protein in one can!! now they're a little high in sodium, but fish oil is an awesome antioxidant too.

My question now is, when do i have to actually worry about mercury? I love to have a couple cans here and there through the day, but now im starting to wonder if long term this is a bad idea.

i have been eating canned tuna for long time because it saved time, but i quit eating recently.to me canned food it's not healthy,i try to cook if i have time.

never really gave this much thought before. Unless you are eating a lot, I wouldn't worrya bout it. I have never heard of anybody getting sick from it

"A lot" is vague.

Measurable amounts of mercury can be found in a single can and scientists disagree as to the significance. What we do know is this: mercury ingested never leaves the body…ever. Mercury isn’t the only thing, nor the worst thing to worry about. DDT along with other problems associated with the overfishing of the waters in which this fish is found seem to have more of a toxic effect.

This may sound hippyish but I only buy fish off the Indian reservations. Their fish seems to come from some of the cleanest waters available.

Damn, looks like I'm fucked. My mercury levels are probably through the roof!

Again, nothing is overly conclusive with this stuff.

I tend to be a hippy when it comes to food though

this i can answer. Most canned tuna has low levels of mercury in it. Solid white albacore has the hightest rating. But for a normal male adult, you d have to eat 6 cans a day, for a month straight for it to have effect. Even children can get away with a can a day... so i think youll be ok bro. If you yahoo it you'll find plenty of other info out there

I've heard that 3 to 4 cans weekly is pretty much safe. Personaly, I wouldnt worry about it to much. Unless your eating it 3 times a day, every day.

I used to eat like one to two cans a day for months at a time. I think it's more dangerous for say children or pregnant women than it is for men. Not that we shouldn't be concerned about it. Also eat the non-white albacore tuna. Has a lot less mercury and it's cheaper. lol. However, the taste is not as good.

I should eat more tuna--good source of cheap protein in the face of rising costs for everything.

Very true bud. Also, has anyone noticed how much milk and cheese has went up in the past year or so ? Its rediculous. Its these damn gas prices. They are sucking the life out of everything. Just this past week, one of my neighborhoods longest standing fish market/Seefood and crab house went out of buisness. And they have been here since 1951. I grew up working in this place and went there all the time as a kid, and its sad to see that place shut down now after all these years. The owner told me its all because of fuel costs. Its causing the price to go up on all kinds of food.

unfortunately yes,
to make matters worse, everything we use and buy from stores, usually shipps there via freight trucks and trains .....BOTH of which run off of diesel fuel, which is increasing in price faster than regular gasoline.
